The Origin: My Dream
Taking a campervan road trip across New Zealand’s South Island had always been on my bucket list. I wanted to fulfill this dream before the kids grew up. I had read reviews mentioning that even though these vans can supposedly accommodate 4 to 6 people, the interior is often barely enough for four, regardless of the vehicle’s size. Plus, rigid luggage is a definite no-go.
This made me feel even more urgency to go while the kids were still small. However, I still had two major concerns. The first was the cost. My wife was incredibly supportive, encouraging me by saying, “If you don’t do it now, will it keep weighing on your mind? If so, just go for it. Money can always be earned back.”
My second concern was the size of the vehicle—it’s an absolute beast. I worried about whether I could handle it on the road, but I kept telling myself, “Countless travelers drive these safely every day. If they can do it, so can I.”
Once I overcame those fears, it was all about the logistics. Booking was simple through Motorhome Republic. I chose them specifically for their Chinese-language support. I knew I’d feel much more secure knowing I could communicate in my own language if we ever broke down in the middle of nowhere.
The First Hurdle
One key lesson I learned: New Zealand’s domestic flights are often delayed. If I were to do it again, I’d definitely avoid tight connections involving domestic air travel. We ended up stranded in Auckland for eight hours. When we landed in Auckland, we had less than an hour left for our connection. There were endless lines of travelers ahead of us. Even when I pleaded with the airport staff for help, they simply replied, “It’s always like this; please just wait.”
By the time we finally cleared Customs, we had to sprint to the domestic terminal, which was about a kilometer away. When we reached the gate, the attendant told us the cabin doors were already closed. “You’ll have to take the next flight to Christchurch, which is eight hours away,” she said. Just like that, our first day’s itinerary was completely ruined.

Taking the Wheel: Meeting the Beast
We finally touched down in Christchurch to a cold, damp night. Since we had missed our campervan pick-up window, we had to check into a hotel for the night. Once we were settled in, we headed to a McDonald’s just around the corner. Honestly, if it weren’t for those Golden Arches, I don’t know how I’d survive in foreign countries.
The next morning, I woke up to sunshine and clear skies-the exact image of New Zealand I’d always had in my mind. The campervan pick-up was seamless. I’d suggest getting there as early as possible to beat the crowds. The staff gave us a quick brief on the power system, the fridge, and how to empty the waste tanks. Then, the keys were handed over. Our road trip had finally begun.
The moment I saw our campervan, even though I had mentally prepared myself, I was still shocked by its size. As I grabbed the wheel, my hands were trembling with fear. Fortunately, it didn’t take me long to get the hang of it. Over the following days, I felt more and more at ease, eventually allowing myself to enjoy the stunning landscapes while driving the beast.

Essential Tip: Why Full Cover is a Must
A friendly reminder: It’s always best to have full insurance for your vehicle. You might not break down, but if anything does happen, it will save you a lot of time and money. For me, I didn’t want to risk being stranded in the middle of nowhere—especially since I’d have to comfort the kids while trying to handle the situation. Having full cover really made the whole trip much more hassle-free.
